SGV EATS

Restaurants are a such a big part of the DNA of the San Gabriel Valley. When the pandemic hit, it was unfortunate to see so many restaurants close down. There was a lot of confusion during this time. Restaurants did not know what to do, and the community did not know which restaurants were still open. In this unique time, we had to learn to navigate through this together. We were inspired to do something to help support the restaurants and the community, so we started a Facebook Group to provide everyone a space to share information, resources, stories, and to support one another in this time of need.

Gratefully, we received a tremendous amount of support and contribution from the community. As more awareness were brought to restaurants that were open, restaurant owners began to see more customers and even new faces. Within a few short weeks, hundreds of posts of restaurants were shared. With membership accumulating to 20K in just over four months, the group evolved into a community of contributors sharing the best eats and drinks in the SGV.

THE STORY

Healthcare heroes are the men and women dedicating their time and risking their lives to serving patients who may be in critical condition and battling COVID-19. These essential workers are facing some of the most stressful times of their lives during this pandemic. Many hospital staff work long 12+ hour shifts which means that when it's time for them to go home, restaurants may be closed, grocery stores could be out of supplies or they are simply too tired to cook.

To give back, we created a fundraiser and successfully raised over $5,000 in less than a week. With the amount raised, we were able to help our local heroes take a well-deserved night to relax with a pre-made meal and continue our mission of supporting our local restaurants and community. After receiving a few interest from restaurants in our community, we combined efforts to help those who are on the medical front lines.

We believe this embodies the mission of the SGV Eats Facebook Group and takes it to the next level: restaurant supporters get to order food for a good cause, restaurant owners get more take out business to help during these difficult times, and medical frontliners get pre-made restaurant quality meals!
